Estate Planning

Fee-Only Financial Planning for High-Income Families and Commercial Real Estate Executives

We review your wills, trusts, beneficiary designations, and business entity documents against what you actually want to happen, then work with an estate attorney to draft or fix anything that's off. We don't practice law, so the drafting is done by an attorney. Yours, or one we introduce you to.

Most estate problems aren't caused by missing documents. They're caused by documents that stopped matching your life. A beneficiary form still naming an ex-spouse. A trust that was never funded. A will written before the kids were born. Beneficiary designations override the will, by the way, and they're the single most overlooked item in otherwise thorough plans. We check them every time. It's the least glamorous five minutes in financial planning, and it may be the most useful.

If you own a business, there's a second layer. What happens to the company is often the biggest question in the whole estate, and the one least likely to have an answer. It sits between the attorney who drafted the will and the accountant who files the return, and nobody asked either of them to own it. That's the kind of gap we're here to close.

What This Covers

What Estate Planning Includes

Reading everything together

We read the wills, trusts, powers of attorney, healthcare directives, and entity documents side by side instead of one at a time. The usual failure isn't a bad document. It's two good documents that disagree with each other.

Beneficiary designations, checked directly

Retirement accounts, insurance policies, and transfer-on-death registrations pass by designation, not by will. We verify them against the actual account records rather than assuming they're right. They frequently aren't.

What happens to the business

How ownership moves if something happens to you, whether your operating agreement supports it, and what it would cost the people inheriting it. For a broker or business owner, this is often the largest single item on the list.

Teaming up with an estate attorney

Drafting is legal work, and we don't do legal work. When documents need to be created or revised, we connect you with an estate attorney and stay in the room so the documents and the financial plan say the same thing.

In Practice

How This Looks for the Clients We Serve

Commercial Real Estate Executives

We will review your wills, trusts, and other estate documents to ensure they fit with your values and goals. If needed, we will connect you with an estate planning attorney to draft the necessary documents that ensure a smooth, tax-efficient transition of your assets to your heirs. It is also critical to understand how your business entity will transition to your heirs if something were to happen to you.

High-Income Families

Your estate plan should reflect your family’s values and protect what you’ve built. We review your wills, trusts, and entity structures, and connect you with estate attorneys as needed to ensure your wealth transitions smoothly and tax-efficiently.

Frequently asked questions

Do you write the wills and trusts?

No. Envision is an investment adviser, not a law firm. We review what you have, flag where it conflicts with your goals or your account records, and work alongside an estate attorney who does the drafting. If you already have one you trust, great. If not, we'll introduce you to a few we work with regularly.

I have a will. Isn't that enough?

It depends on when it was written and what's changed since. A will doesn't control retirement accounts or life insurance, which pass by beneficiary designation, and it may not address your business at all. The most common thing we find isn't a missing document. It's an outdated one.

Does estate planning only matter if I'm wealthy enough to owe estate tax?

The federal estate tax touches very few households, but estate planning is about far more than that tax. Who makes decisions if you can't. Who raises your kids. How your business keeps running. Whether your family avoids probate. Those questions matter at every net worth.
